How Little Free Libraries Originated and Expanded

A longtime Washington, DC, human resources professional, Chandra "Chandi" Krohl excels in enabling mission-focused outcomes. With a strong community focus, Chandi Krohl helped start and expand a local Food Truck Friday and set up a Little Free Library (LFL). The latter consists of neighborhood repositories of books free to take from and contribute to.

Now found in 60,000 locations spanning the globe, LFLs had their roots in 2009 when a Hudson, Wisconsin, resident built a library modeled on a traditional one-room schoolhouse. Over the next year, he constructed 30 libraries for friends and relatives and, in the process, began a charitable trend that encourages reading at all age levels.

The success of Little Free Libraries is in significant part due to the efforts of the stewards who erect them near their homes and organize them. Creating an LFL includes a registration process that places the library on a map and gives it a charter sign and metal nameplate. In addition to the actual LFL structure, which can be in various configurations, stewards often put in a perch or post on which the library securely stands.
