Problem definition
Dashboard creation for user groups for MVP prototype.
Design a common part of a dashboard to be used by all user groups
There were several user groups with different flows and different data access rights and we wanted to design a dashboard for each group. In order to reduce the engineering effort  spent on the MVP, we thought to identify the common parts of this dashboard that could be used by all user groups and code these parts first.
Research
On this project, I had direct communication with the end-users from two companies. However, all our meetings were online and field research was impossible. Therefore, I started by conducting in-depth video interviews.
I asked users to describe their entire working day, and what actions in the interface they do most often, what kind of information is relevant to planning their day, what statistics they usually need, what kind of difficulties they regularly face.
I analysed the information and produced several proposed reports to be used on the dashboard. I then validated my proposed reports with the users via a survey.
Prototyping and estimating
The most common features were laid down to a low-fidelity prototype which I presented to the Product Owner and developers to discuss realisation and produce effort and cost estimates. Whereas the research gave us a very precise picture of which are the most common features for all roles, we prioritised the most valuable for coding and left the less valuable features in the backlog for future research.
User testing
After discussing with the team, I presented and tested the final prototype with end-users and based on the testing results I made improvements prior to the final version.
Next steps
The next steps will be to get feedback using a survey and work on the other features in the backlog. The research for the dashboard highlighted additional problems in other parts of the application which need attention and might even influence the dashboard design.
