IBIO
Plant transportation & Biodegradable waste

This concept was my entry to the Starpack 2011 competition. I received the Highly Commended Award with IBIO. The brief B was to design new concept for packaging plants. It was sponsored by British Polythene Industries plc. The packaging is made of Plaswood, which is 100% recycled polythene.

Judges’ Comments
"Lovely concept and tons of secondary use possibilities,
but it doesn't fit the brief in terms of materials."

Easy to transport
IBIO is a vessel for plants in different sizes. It supports and protects the plant while transportation. You can also use it as a container for biodegradable waste. The vessel can be produced in family sizes or for smaller households. The handles are designed to make the transportation easier all the way from the nursery room to the consumer. You can also attach IBIOs together what prevents them from falling while transporting many plants at the same time.

Integrated underplate
Like the normal plant pots, IBIO has a hole in the bottom so that the extra water gets out of it and the plant does not rotten or grow moldy. However, there is an under plate integrated to the bottom. In this way, the water can be poured out if necessary and it does not leak all over the place.
Container for biodegradable waste
IBIO would remind you the importance of sorting your household waste. The problem with biodegradable waste is that it might smell if it is not emptied often enough or it has too much liquids in it. That is why these containers are usually hidden under the sink. I designed IBIO not only to be pleasant for eye but also to surve as a functional product to ease the household waste management.

1. Take the plant out and wash the IBIO properly.
2. Put the biodegradable plastic bag into the IBIO.
3. Prevent the smell effects by closing the bag with a twist.
4. Pull the rolled handles of the bag into the slot for a tight closure.
Hang on
You can put IBIO hanging for example in the kitchen cabinet´s doorhandle. Or you might want to make your
work environment more ecological.
Informing the consumer
I designed the label to resemble the plant´s leaf. The labels could variate depending on what flower is
in IBIO. For the consumer it is essential to know how the plant is being taken cared of. Should it be watered often or how much sun does it need. These all can be seen from the symbols that are on the label. The origin of the plant could also be mentioned in it. Even though, I have selected the rose begonia as my example plant you can grow your own plants in it as well.
You can put your own notes about the seeds and slide them into the slot. Write down the plant type, the date when you have planted them and what is the estimated date for the first seedling to surface.
Let the flowers bloom!
