The Challenge
In 2020, Google doesn't have homepage doodles for religious holidays because it couldn't include all religions and celebrations. But they decided to have secondary illustrations to complement user searches.
My role
I had the opportunity to work on the Diwali celebration doing an illustrated banner for Google Search. When the users search for Diwali in Google this illustration will be in the results with a short animation.
The Process
After we received the brief, I start with the research, mood-board creation and the initial sketches. We presented to client this raw sketches to receive feedback and define the next step.

They selected the Diya a traditional lamp used to give light in this celebration.

I used the extended Google color palette, I wanted to propose something warm and if were possible use some colors of the Indian flag.

We presented this final illustrations with two diferente color palettes and a variety of Diya lamps.

The Result
This was the selected option by the client. I wanted to represent the victory of the light over the darkness with the sun and the plants inside the lamp and a big flame on top surrounded by the night with some starts and planets.

When a user search for Diwali in Google Search the result will display the illustration enriching the experience.

Easter Egg
You can find this easter egg if you search for Diwali in Google. You will interact with the lamps.
