Made in the Now #327

This illustration for Made in the Now was in response to the news that researchers from the Oxford University are utilising expanding mobile phone networks in Sub-Saharah Africa to reduce the repair time for broken water pumps in rural communities. I focused on conveying the key themes of water, mobile networks and Kenya by incorporating recognisable icons that were linked together through positive and negative space. The shape of Kenya is formed by a series of puddles that follow the shape of the country’s eight provinces. Further emphasising the water theme is the spaces between these provinces, which references top down views of rivers, creeks and deltas. Formed within the centre and continuing to use the negative space from between these provinces is a water droplet above a signal wave, the universally understood icons for water and mobile networks.
