Graphic novel workshop?!

I was lucky enough to attend a 3 day graphic novel workshop (in Seville?!) at the beginning of July which was taught by Fran Meneses and Ed Pavez.

Prior to this workshop I had never made any graphic novels before, just my teenage summers of renting and reading lots of manga to offer.

Top 3 things I learnt ...

✍️ The art of writing a story that would be topically and visually interesting. I've never worked with screenwriting or dialogue before, to me Ed gave away the keys to a secret kingdom on how to make an everyday boring moment into something interesting.

🎥 Using frames and cuts! I'm an editorial illustrator mainly, so I work with one image per story. To get my brain to not only write a story but compose the frames and page turns to reflect the dialogue and create an atmosphere as well as a bond to the characters was challenging to say the least.

Details, details, details. How to fit dialogue onto a page, how to illustrate the action while keeping in mind how body languages work. The effects of negative space and lighting can have on the pace and mood. In a very fun and fascinating way, it's quite intoxicating to have all this choice as an illustrator.
Thank you!
