Border Wall (Feedback Performance)

In collaboration with the Atascosa Borderlands team (Jack Dash and Luke Swenson) I did this performance playing the border wall that divides Mexico and the United States. We played it with found objets from the area such as stones, pieces of metal, waste and water jugs that are intentionally there for migrants to help them survive. We put a feedback machine on the steel bars of the wall and so the resonance, created the frequencies that we can hear. Feedback is created by a microphone feeding signal into a speaker that feeds back that same signal into the microphone and this happens again and again, creating a sonic loop. This for me, is also a metaphor of the sociopolitical context of the borderlands area. How does this war involves both parties and how they feed each other?

At minute 0:54 it’s possible to hear three explosions that we first thought were thunders, but because the sky was clear, we talked with friends from the area and they said that during those last few weeks, people have listened to those explosions and they believed that they were dynamite explosions for creating tunnels under the wall.
