Initial design brief: The aim is to design a temporary relief shelter, multidisciplinary in nature, quick and easy to deploy and construct.
Final design brief: 1) It should follow the organisational and institutional stakeholder requirements concerning its storage, maintenance, and deployment.
2) The design and material should meet the national disaster guidelines.
3) Even post-disaster the design should sustain any situation and environment it’s exposed to.
4) The design should allow flexibility in modifications to adapt to any situation and circumstances.
5) The design process should follow an empathic approach to provide a feeling of home, comfort, security, and stability to promote the recuperating process of the affected community.
Solution: The after-effects of disaster renders the affected community miserable and helpless. To promote the recuperation process and minimise the discomfort 'Carapace' was designed.
Carapace is a temporary housing unit for a post-disaster scenario. Made to withstand extreme external pressures and support various terrain the design allows flexibility as it is modifiable, quick, and easy to deploy and construct. The whole unit is a shelter kit to be deployed and assembled on site.
Value: This project strives to follow SDG goal 11. To uphold the right to adequate housing after a disaster and to fill the gap of imitations in existing frameworks for reconstruction and recovery.
