Absurd Cities
an Interactive Art Installation about Urban Transportation
Out cities are in many ways, more similar to
ancient cities than different. Take technology out
the equation, and we end up with a same-old
Bess in a new dress
Why do we still have busses without tyres that require ugly ovehanging electric wires, over-engineered infrastructure which require maintenance that destroys streets and communities for months and months? Why do we still have those vehicles that require space which could be used for the public?
Why are we still relying on archaic trains running in our cities which offer absolutely no answer to new challenges such as delivery of goods?
How do we still allow a situation where huge trains that run with the driver only and maybe a handful of passengers, while consuming unbelievable amount of energy?
And finally, how come did we end up on a situation that riding a bike in a city is in most cases faster that using public transportation? Think - how come a human powered vehicle is FASTER than trains and busses?
This is no less than absurd!
Its time to stop patching and improving. Its time to rethink urban transportation and design a new solution that addresses modern challenges and is powered by modern technologies.
As individuals living in the city, we use public spaces, public transportation, roads, and so forth.
As individuals, it is hard for each to grasp what is happening with the entire system. It is similar to a driver that cannot know at any moment what is going on on the road just 1 km ahead. As new technologies and challenges emerge, it's time for us to rethink what is happening with our urban environment. What are our visions of the future while getting to know the tools available to us. This process should be a complete deconstruction of tall the elements that make a city. We believe it's about time to be more radical and, if necessary, get rid of components that are still with us (maybe because of momentum from the past) yet are not beneficial anymore.

Our vision is to encourage participants to interact with each other and not just with the work. The "gameplay" will be designed in such a way, so participants will interact with it as a group. This leads to another vital factor: making the participants think for themselves and develop their own ideas and insights on how they would like to see their future city. At the end, this experiment should not end up as yet another artwork, but become a platform for people to learn, develop ideas and share them. Those insights and ideas will be recorded for further use in the future. free, radical, and nonbinding

As this experiment is virtual, it could show live scenarios that cannot be experienced in real life. For example, how would a city look if autonomous cars or bicycles were the only means of transportation available? Going all the way with radical ideas and the freedom to ask questions and see what the answers might look like, without tearing off railways or streets, is a good way to learn more about the opportunities and possibilities, and thus develop innovative and radical ideas for the future of our urban life.
Whats next?
We are looking for you. A talented software engineer / intern / student who would like use their talent to create something that has the potential to change the future of our cities. This project is not yet another fun artwork. It could be used to generate interesting ideas from residents of cities and push them up for actual implementation
