2681QCA TYPOGRAPHY & LAYOUT

The major project for this course is split into two scaffolded assessment items, requiring you to first collate a Type Specimen Poster demonstrating typeface selections, and secondly, to produce a printed Publication Design.

Your Publication Design outcome should represent a significant amount of consistent research, experimentation, reflection, and refinement. Participating in class workshops, discussing your work with your classmates, and sharing your progress with your tutor will be essential to your success.
TYPE SPECIMEN POSTER
The typefaces I selected for my type specimen poster and publication were chosen based on my understanding of the four essays and their general theme and personality. I feel that my typefaces work well with each other but are still unique. I also ensured to choose a body typeface that include a range of fonts, with true italics. My feedback was that Axia Stencil was not fitting to the content of Grid Systems, so I changes that typeface to Azo Sans. Some positive feedback was the colour scheme, layout and the stripe design element, which I based The Science of Typography title pages on.
Grid & Guides
- 6 Columns
- Margins all 14mm except inside (20mm)
- 4mm Gutter

The guide lines I used in my publication were different from this due to the change to title spreads, but the lines for body text remained.
PUBLICATION
Although I had some trouble with printing and binding, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this publication. It has taught me a lot about layout design and typography in general, as well as the time that must be invested into professional publications. I changed and graphics and colour scheme for each essay, but kept the style layout consistent to make it more interesting to the reader. I found the process of reading the essays quite boring, although the concepts behind them were quite interesting. Therefore I wanted to design my publication to keep the reader entertained. My outcome is easily legible and readable, while still having the amount of personality I was aiming for.
