IT - Character Designs

I had the pleasure to help developing the final look of Pennywise the Clown at StudioADI, who also made the prosthetics for the film.

Creating a reinterpretation of Stephen King's iconic creation was a group effort of many talented artists.
Sketch V01 and V02
Early Pennywise concept sketches. There was already much design and exploration work done before I came on board. I gave the design dark eyes and creepy teeths.

Director Andy Muschietti was quite specific about how he imagined Pennywise. He was looking for an iconic shape and was keen on a large baby-like head.

The second sketch shows a version of Pennywise with burned skin.
Pennywise
At this point actor Bill Skarsgård got cast as Pennywise. I used his likeness in this rendered concept.

Besides the large baby-like head, director Andy Muschietti wanted Pennywise to have small "rabbit teeth", a wall-eyed look and large ears. I implemented this into the concept.
Fire and acid wounds
It was planned from the beginning to use prosthetic make-up. Therefore, while I was working on the wounds, I had to make sure to not take away anything too deep that would affect the shape of the actor's real face.

The first concept shows burned skin. The second concept is a more extreme version of acid burn. (Those scenes ultimately were omitted from the film.)
