MFA Thesis Work - Drawings, paintings and animations

Coney Boardwalk

Painting created to explore the color and abstract aspects that could relate to the finished installation. I didn't actually know where the work was going, but in a counter-intuitive process I allowed the work in front of me to show me the way, as opposed to my initial process of preparing all aspects ahead of time. This process led me to a final result that was surprising- both to myself and the viewers that saw the final installation.
Studio Space at William Paterson University

I was fortunate that this space was available for me to work towards my MFA thesis. Encouraged by my thesis professors to get "out of my comfort zone", I worked larger, on the walls and with little preparatory sketching. I let it fly.
Tracing Paper Animations

I have always used tracing paper as part of my conceptualization process- with illustration and design work it is essential. In the studio work here, I used tracing paper as part of a process of automatism- the drawings just flowed from my hand- not exactly abstract, but with no specific desire to communicate a narrative or story in a specific manner.

Maquette with Projections

Before constructing the ful-sized imstallation I wanted to experiment with a smaller model that I could project on with the digital images that I was creating at the same time. Model was constructed with wood, screen and paper- and did provide me with some concepts that I would move into the final.

Installation In Progress

Using materials mostly purchased at Home Depot, I started to build the structure. I had to locate a theatrical scrim seller who was somewhere in Jersey City. I wanted to use scrim because it would "hold" the projected lines and colorsl, but also allow for transparency, which would be crucial for the final look of the piece.
