Maritsa River Arts and Cultural Center

“Water is the driving force in the nature” Leonardo da Vinci said.
But there are still places in the world where water is neglected. Bulgaria is one of these countries where rivers are perceived as an obstacle. Because of their poor maintenance often they are witnessing a flooding and destruction. This in turn makes people afraid of rivers and lakes and example of this is the shift of cities away from them. This is the reason this project is shifting its focus from the traditional cultural centers, meets  all the requirements of Cultural and Art Centers but to focus on water and to be dedicated to water. It exposes this nature element in different standard and interactive methods and at the same time to be made up of it - “to be water itself”. The main purpose of the project is to give people a chance to learn about the essence of water and to respect it, because water is an integral part of our lives and for its loving and preserving we should first know it.
The shape of the building represents the form of Maritsa and the facades are inspired by water and made up of water.
The roof of the building is a pool designed on many horizontal surfaces. This way it seems the water is tilted, but it actually is in a horizontal position, making an illusion. The bottom of the pool is made of glass which allow the sun to enter the building and create a unique interior shaded by the water. On the south facade pool overflows and passes in a water cascade, turning the facade into a beautiful waterfall.
The idea of building A Museum of Water and in paricular Museum of Maritsa River was provoked by the fact that the river is forgotten. Contrary to the thesis that all societies are born along rivers, here in Plovdiv, Maritsa has become a barrier wall between the two sides and an obstacle for people who pass over it.
My survey of residents showed the majority of the population has never been down to the river. By designing a project of this magnitude I aim to "bring people closer to the water". To provide the opportunity to people to explore Maritsa and to love it. Through interactive and stationary tools, visitors to learn more about the water, more about the history of the river and its specific flora and fauna.
The first level of the museum is dedicated to Maritsa River. Here can be found aquariums with representatives of local flora and fauna, also Photographs of the river over the years, information boards with the river history etc.
On the second level of the museum are provided interactive methods for familiarisation with the water, its nature and specification. For example - tubes with samples from different pools, Ice room, a hall for projection of scientific films and also panoramic room for simulations of underwater walks.
The main attraction of the museum is designed hole without air conditioning called "in the core of the waterfall." It is a hole in the whole volume of the building with four walls covered by water, representing the feeling of walk in the middle of the waterfall. It provides platforms to walk on two levels and is available only from the area of the museum
Outside of the museum, the building has an exhibition spaces with a specialized area for young and emerging artists; reading zone with an area for  presentation of new books; educational area for training and lectures; multipurpose conference hall with a capacity of 500 people; restaurant and coffee bar and plenty of lounge areas for resting and meeting authors and audiences.

Building a facility of a similar nature with precise control of water would show people that water is our friend and not an enemy. In order to achieve that, in this museum people are brought to water and water is brought back to people.
