Manteca Book (The History of Salsa in NYC)

For my type II class at Pratt Institute we were asked to create a book based on a theme inspired by New York City. I live in the bronx and I immediately thought about the importance that music plays in shaping the identity of many New York residents. Salsa is a very important identifier for some communities in the Bronx, hence why I decided to make a book about the History of Salsa in New York.

I chose the name Manteca because it is the title of one important song composed by Chano Pozo and Dizzie Gillespie around the big band era. It is one of the first theme that features the nuances of what Salsa music is composed of currently. It was the start of the evolution of this rhythm in New York. Don't quote me on that though.
We were asked to create a one minute motion piece based on the theme of our book. I wanted to translate the same vibrance and color I had managed to put in the book and still keeping a simple and old style look. These are some stills followed by the actual clip.
