The community set on a gold-mining site dating back to the period of the Roman Empire lives an unsettling reality. After the site has been bought by a Canadian investor in the early 2000’s, whose massive cyanide-based mineral extraction project threatens to cause an ecological disaster, most of the population sold their properties to the investor, who encouraged residents to move, offering in exchange flats in the nearest city.
20 years later, the project is yet to be approved. However, Roșia
Montană is now a ghost town. Most houses are ruins, most of the youth has left.
