TypoHungry – Hungarian Typography in the 21st Century

TypoHungry
Hungarian Typography in the 21st Century
Vol. 1. / 2000 – 2021
Art book about the history of Hungarian typography for the last 20 years. Curatorial interviews, selected typographic works from 242 artists and creative studios, on more than 200 pages, in Hungarian and English.
About the book

When we decided to publish printed albums featuring Hungarian contemporary artists in addition to our online platform, we thought a lot about which topic to cover first in the series. We were already set on starting with design, and decided that within graphic design, typography is the genre with which we could best illustrate the kind of explosive technical and aesthetic progress that came about in the profession and has a constant effect on our daily lives as well.

Anyone could submit their typographic works to the open call announced by ArtHungry, and we invited an eight-plus-one-member curatorial committee to select the projects that could represent the state of Hungarian typography competently; these can be found in the last chapter of this album. Our first idea in connection with the competition’s material was publishing a catalogue-like album, but since no one in the country has examined this era in terms of typography yet, we decided to research the field and compile the most important moments of 21st century Hungarian typography as well, within the framework of a detailed historical overview.

It is important to note that this volume does not deal with graphic design as a whole, but specifically with typographic projects and designers we considered to be inevitable when dealing with this period of local typography.

We would like to thank everyone who helped in creating this publication, which we think fills a long-felt need: the excellent curatorial team for their availability, and of course, all the designers, typographers, calligraphers, graffiti artists and font-obsessed people for taking part in this journey through time.
