The Background
 
The ethos of St Magnus is the delivery of individualised person-centred care in an environment that is safe, structured and respectful of the individuals within it. Treatment begins with a comprehensive and holistic assessment of each patient’s mental health, physical health and security needs. This involves a thorough assessment of behavioural risks, mental health related risks, physical health risks (e.g. falls, nutritional problems), and forensic risk for those who have committed offences. 

Following the assessment, a diagnosis and formulation of the patient’s needs is made, which is then used to inform, direct and plan individualised treatment and care plans based on evidence-based practice. The principles of the Structured Assessment Process and Care Programme Approach are applied throughout the therapeutic process, thus enabling the involvement of patients and individuals and agencies relevant to the patient’s care. The participation of family members is encouraged at all stages of the process.
