KUPAS - Bamboo Coat Stand

a collaboration with FASA Bamboo Works Bandung, Indonesia. I was assigned to research the company’s market opportunity and make a real prototype product based from company profile image and the market I want to get in. The design process includes field research, survey & questionary, trend forecasting, and quality control for product manufacturing.
PERCEIVING BAMBOO
Bamboo is cheap; yet renewable and sustainable natural resources that can be used in many ways of manu-
facturing and design process; a very wide range of usage & utilization.

FIELD RESEARCH

FASA studio already has advance manufacturing techniques usingbamboo as its material, such as laminating, bending, and make a veneer straightly from the inner part of a bamboo. I conducted a research in FASA studio’s market and explore new possibilities to develop a different product.

the moodboard for target market; the target is described in general with these keywords:
“warm, natural, young, eco, simple, modern”.

IDEAS BEHIND THE PRODUCT

I want to make a strong, material-contrast product that emphasize the natural curve & warm emotion from bamboo with a heavy-duty rough textured material; that results in using andesite stone as a supporting base of the product. I also make a 3D model with 3Ds max to help me design the shape and measuring proportions that will be used in the actual product.

The making process was entirely handmade.
The result of this design process is a laminated-pressed bamboo coat stand with andesite stone as its base, entitled “Kupas”. The word “Kupas” was derived from Indonesian word translated as “Peeled”.
This product has won an award: "Best Interior Element Product" in Zuchex International Houseware & Gift Exhibition 2014.
