At our visit to Ecco, one designer said something that stuck with us: ”Our customer is literally dying”.
We chose to interpret this quite literally and created a collection that draws its inspiration from death and the rituals surrounding it.
Our main sources of inspiration is the ritual of wrapping the dead as well as the colour white, which is in many cultures related to death. Also Influenced by 19th century mourning jewellery, pieces that incorporated a physical part of a deceased person that relatives would wear to keep the person close, we created to different looks resulting in a “wild” and a “mild” shoe.
In our “wild” design we looked upon the shoe very much as an accessory, created a knit and carefully wrapped the foot, encasing it with a bold and assymetric piece of jewellery that refused to let go.
In our “mild” shoe, we wanted to play on the same elements, but make it more wearable. We chose a leather band wrapping around the shoe to represent the bejewelled element, imprinted leather with knit and kept the draped surfaces for the reference of the wrapping of the dead and used silver to coat leather creating a metal effect. The laces digging all the way into the sole hold on tight, and the knits’ white serene colour keeps death near. The shoe we created has a modern look, but still feels etheral.
