This illustration was made on a urban sketching session hosted by Urban Sketchers - Delhi, at the twin monuments. Bade Khan ka Gumbad and Chhote Khan ka Gumbad are located in Kotla Mubarakpur, a tight residential colony called South Extension in Delhi.
The textural quality and vocabulary of the two tombs from the pre-Mughal era stood out, and now lie neglected (which I perceive is what makes these obscure structures more beautiful and add contrast and depth to the landscape). The Chhote Khan ka Gumbad is defined by plain geometric finishes that highlight the framed openings and an intricate dome, while the Bade Khan ka Gumbad stands tall with intricately carved frontage and stone masonry walls.
I sat myself at the aangan(garden), which is now a common space for children to run around and play, while elders sunbathe and have winter afternoon siestas under a backdrop of their choice. Some places are best left undiscovered by the masses, so that locals in context make it a part of their hearts.
