I always want more Peranakan!
a swatch watch design assignment
This series features the Peranakan motifs of Peony Flower, Butterfly and the Phoenix.

The Peony Flower as the king of flowers is adored by all Peranakan ladies as they look up to become like the Peony in full bloom. The Butterfly is a symbolism of fertility and are often used as decorations on the beds of newly wed couples. The Phoenix on the other hand represents wealth and prosperity. It is often believed that with the Phoenix, good news would follow.

I created the designs of the motifs to be half line art and half filled to reflect the hybrid essence in the Peranakan, Straits Chinese culture - a combination of Malay-Chinese influence.
