  • This self portrait looks at how technology has crafted and changed my lifestyle through the years. From my first telephone call to my current smartphone, the timeline lists fourteen obtained devices in a chronological order and highlight which aspects of my life these things have influenced (communication, entertainment, management and media). It outlines the slower paced periods of my life where everything was rooted in a very manual and physical process. And visibly indicates when devices started to speed up the way I lived through the progressive digitalization of many aspects of my life.
  • ENTERTAINMENT
The television set was a huge aspect of my childhood, bringing me my favourite cartoons and shows. Story telling shifted from accustomed means such as books and oral story telling traditions to an animated medium. It created an extremely accessible way of experiencing a narrative, one that didn’t require me to make a visit to the library to pick out new books or wait until bed time to be read a story.

    MEDIA
The television set was also my earliest resource of media coverage and outside information. It opened up my knowledge to ongoing events, while commercials informed me on the latest toys, movies, and shows. My learning experience was expanded outside of the classroom and into my living room through kids programs and preliminary knowledge on colour, vocabulary, numbers, and the like.

My first gaming console shifted my gaming experience from the computer back to  the T.V. It rooted me back to the experience of a narrative through TV shows, but added a new interactive aspect that allowed my participation to guide the storyline. The highly immersive virtual environments established my interests in video games and introduced me to more complex virtual interactions that I never experienced through elementary computer games.   Together, the Gamecube, along with various other contributing technologic devices and tools (the computer, instant messaging, internet access) created a gradual shift away from participating in non-virtually grounded activities.
