Modern Thresholds

“Symbolically, a threshold signifies the passage from one level to another - usually from a lower earthly plane to a higher, spiritual one. It is the entrance to a new world, the boundary at which the natural meets the supernatural.”

Modern Thresholds is a series of images that plays on these themes.

Much the same as ethereal planes and liminal spaces in fiction remain intangible from the perspective of our own world, the subjects in these images remain out-of-reach when viewed from the position of the audience.

At this vantage point, the body of work aims to place the viewer right on the edge of the uncanny and in doing so, prompt them to question the reality of each image.

The isolation of the subject, out-of-place in a vast, seemingly endless landscape, attributes to these objects a hint of significance and otherworldiness, further pushing the narrative presented in the ideas above.

Furthermore, with the physical nature of the photograph in mind, an attempt at a closer inspection may only serve to obfuscate the subject further, rather than providing a better clarification as to its authenticity.

Continuing the parallels to such spaces in fiction, the true nature of each subject can only really be revealed by those with a specific knowledge, in this case an ability to identify hallmarks and pitfalls of the medium used in the creation process, with the uncanny nature of each image arising from the limitations of the artist and medium itself.
