Immersive Architecture | Comparative study

What makes an architecture IMMERSIVE?
In order to find out, 3 study cases are selected, that offer an immersive experience to the viewer, by creating an environment that differs from reality.

Binhai Science Museum | Tschumi architects
C-Mine, Genk | 51N4E
Binhai Science Museum, is one case of architectural adaptation, where the architect has decided to intervene throughout all the volume of the building.

C-Mine shows another approach for adapting the building, by intervening partly in the old building.
Parc de la Villette | Bernard Tschumi

This site is chosen to get a bigger picture of immersivity in architecture.

The huge dimensions of the site (55 ha), the use of symbolism and the creation of 35 unique structures, were some of the reasons to chose this as a study case.

Comparing three different approaches, can give a lead regarding the elements or techniques that could be applied in architecture to give an immersive experience.

CONCLUSIONS:

- The creation of new dimensions is a characteristic of immersive architecture, which aims to convey an immersive emotion to observers. The itineraries defined for experiencing these emotions are well thought out and closely related to the concept of the building.

- Immersive architecture is closely related to collective memory and historical context.

- Immersive architecture should be such that the form of the intervention serves the function and current needs of residents.
