Varosha "The Ghost Town" since 1974 Famagusta Cyprus

Varosha, in Famagusta, has been unoccupied since the 1974 conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots left it in an inaccessible military zone. The move prompted backlash from the Greek Cypriots in the south of the island, who view it as an indirect land grab.

In the 1960s, Varosha, a suburb of Cyprus, was an elite vacation destination that attracted stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot to its pristine beaches and high-rise hotels.

After Turkey invaded the island in 1974, Varosha's 40,000 citizens fled. According to the Daily Mail,  residents are still banned from visiting the abandoned resort, which is now blockaded by a fence that extends to the sea.
