The Gambian View
As a personal assistant for disabled people, I had the once in a lifetime chance to go to The Gambia. During this journey I met Ibrahim aka Souljah aka DJ Puff Weed. He was my guide in the fields of Gambian music, subculture and empowerment of young Gambian people.
At first I hat the idea to do some Graffiti in the streets of Dippa Kunda, the area of Serekunda, where we spent most of the time. During the first Graffiti action we realised how much people, specially young ones, passed by, stand still, want to learn it and where really happy about this colourful picture in their street.
Ibrahim and me had the spontaneous idea to do a workshop with some of the kids in the next days.. I bought some new spray cans and met at the wall where some guys were waiting which Ibrahim informed. The idea was to paint something local so that people identify with. Finally it became DK City (Dippa Kunda City) as the locals called their district.
It was a nice atmosphere in the corner, some more kids stand still, completed the wall or started a new one by their own. Everybody was happy whether they painted or just be a part of this moment. I would not hat thought in my dreams in the beginning of this journey to make such an experience and create such a artful happening with all this guys.
Next idea is to organise an Art and Graffiti Festival in Dippa Kunda with long walls, local artists, workshops, music and a lot of inspiration.
