What’s it like living in a box? Depends on who you ask. “Schrödinger's cat” is a thought experiment in which a hypothetical cat placed inside a sealed box with poison is simultaneously both alive and dead. It isn’t until an observer opens said box that we get a definitive answer. This ability to be in multiple states at the same time is known as quantum superposition. And in a way aren’t we all a tad bit like the cat, wandering aimlessly in between states... happy, confused, bathing, cleaning, reading, living. The inhabitants of 223 Qiao Jia Lu occupy these boxes unaware of the world beyond. Who is watching them play through the windows? In a related thought experiment, physicist Eugene Wigner wanted to take things a step further. Known as “Wigner’s friend”, this experiment would show how the strange nature of the universe allows two participants to experience disparate, clashing realities. Let’s say Wigner’s friend is observing this box, opens it, and records his findings. Now imagine Wigner standing outside the room, peeking through a window, unaware of the results and unable to interact with the box. Without this information, the laws of quantum mechanics force Wigner to assume the cat is in superposition. These two observers are experiencing two realities from the same event. This experiment begs the question, is observation inherently flawed? Take a gander at the many stories taking place in 223 Qiao Jia Lu. What do you see?
