La película tuvo su estreno mundial en el prestigioso Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín y participó en el Festival de Cine de Málaga. El Despertar de las hormiga se convirtió en el primer filme costarricense en ser nominada entre las finalistas en la categoría de mejor película Iberoamericana de la 34 Edición de los premios Goya de la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España.
The film had its world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival and participated in the Malaga Film Festival. The Awakening of the Ants became the first Costa Rican film to be nominated among the finalists in the category of best Ibero-American film at the 34th Edition of the Goya Awards of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain.
