The Park of Villa Ceci
Integration of a green area in the urban fabric
This is the master thesis project I developed and discuss during my graduation in December 2021. It is a proposal of alternative city development that suggest the introduction of urban agriculture as an active component of the urban fabric.
The economy and life of Carrara and its territory revolve around marble and its production cycle, but at what cost? The marble industry not only generates highly polluting dust, but over the years has caused a progressive industrialization and urbanization of the area to the detriment of green areas and agricultural activity. Villa Ceci and the surrounding plots, today represent the last lots that survived the expansion process of the city, as well as the only important green space in Marina di Carrara. The goal of the project is to make this area an active component of the city where every part of it contributes to improving the quality of life. The most generous portion, dedicated to agriculture, aims to introduce a new production system, which over time may represent a sustainable alternative to the marble industry by combining innovative cultivation techniques and traditional practices, always respecting the place and the surrounding nature. An area of the park, then, will be dedicated to the mitigation of flood events, which are increasingly frequent, while as regards the Mediterranean forest, the restoration of the damaged habitat and its integration into the park system is expected.Aware that for a comparison with the marble industry the area considered would not be sufficient, the final aim of the project is to provide a series of “guidelines” that could become models to be adopted also in other points of the territory affected by similar issues. In this way, a new sustainable system would be created, much more organized and complex, integrated with the urban fabric and with an active role within it, strictly connected to the growth of the city and its needs, but at the same time respectful of the needs of the surrounding environment.
