The Cash for work program was a huge push for the locals to move forward. I got a chance to talk with the head of the program the Tzu Chi, a Buddhist Foundation and he said "We're not giving them money, "We're inspiring them, to start a new life, to  rise up.."

I interviewed one of the locals from the program and he said that the program gives P500/day and if you recover a dead body you'll get an additonal P1,500

Strike!
"Pearl of the Orient" Philippines, was struck by the world's strongest typhoon, with sustained winds of 300+ kph, leaving millions affected, houses damaged, and people displaced. The death toll is now at 10,000 and still rising.

On 11/13/2013, I arrived five days after the storm to help transport my 91-year-old grandma and to try to persuade my other relatives to leave this place temporarily. I saw something:

A glimpse of the future where all resources are depleted, leaving nothing but ourselves to starve one by one or resort to killing each other just to survive.

A glimpse of the past when there was no "us" but "we." Living a simple life was the norm, walking from house to house with no communication just to know what was happening. No cars, no electricity, no machines.

A glimpse of the present where we have become overly dependent. Dependent on how the world has become so easy that we are waiting for things to happen. We have become so reliant that we forget how to truly live.
