JODIE WILKINS PORTFOLIO
MICHAEL LEVIN INSPIRED SERIES:
Simple, black and white series taking inspiration from Michael Levin’s minimalistic work.  I used the rule of leading lines in this series to guide the viewer’s eyes through the shot. I created depth in the piece by positioning the camera with the focus point, for example tyres, leading into the distance. The light monochrome creates a calming and peaceful atmosphere, allowing the audience to experience the shot. The series works well together as a collage showing different areas of the same location.

MANIPULATED SELF PORTRAITS:
I manipulated self portraits by moving parts of the face around to create a different take on my face. I used many viewpoints based on cubist theory to show movement. I experimented with colour, changing the whole piece black and white as well as changing just the manipulated parts. I personally prefer the colour with black and white piece as it highlights the manipulated parts which helps to add interest to the piece.

INNER THOUGHTS:
This series shows how people can think in their heads and the effects of mental health. I captured simple headshots with a black background and studio lighting to have the model as the pure focus. Using  Affinity Photo, I added the graphics describing the feelings I wanted to express. The aim of the piece was to spread awareness through a simple yet effective technique.

TRAPPED IN MY HEAD:
This final edit evolved from initially creating M.C. Escher inspired edits, with an image inside the pupil. I decided this wasn’t effective and eye catching, so I decided to create an uncomfortable, disturbing piece. My favourite part of the photo is how at first glance it looks like a regular eye but the more the audience looks at it the hand becomes the main focus. The hand helps add depth and mystery to the piece.  I experimented with both black and white and colour versions finding that viewers felt more uncomfortable and disturbed with the black and white edit.

BEAUTY OF FLOWERS:
Bold, bright coloured series of flowers showing their beauty and capturing the small details. I chose a black backdrop to contrast with the vibrant colours of the flowers. The backdrop also helps to add depth to the images making the flowers come alive. I especially like how bright and colourful this series is, giving off a positive and happy atmosphere.  The bright lighting contrasting against the black background shows how powerful life is compared to death.

OTHER SELF:
I created a series to reflect how people can have more than one self.  This shows how people can chose to hide their feelings. To create these pieces I removed certain features from the face, either replacing or removing them depending on the meaning of the edit. I like how the absence of a feature can say as much as replacing it with something else. I experimented with replacing the face with masks of famous characters showing the connection of the model’s feelings to the characters used.

TYLER SPANGLER INSPIRED SERIES:
I took inspiration from Tyler Spangler’s chaotic brightly coloured work to create this series. I captured well-lit, simple portraits to later add graphics, creating bold abstract pieces. I used bright colours to emphasise the unusual graphics. I like how different yet eye catching these edits are. They draw in and intrigue the audience.

SUNSETS:
I decided to create a sunset series but wanted to avoided taking a regular simple approach but to experiment with colour, depth of field, reflections and silhouettes.
In the first photo I experimented with depth of field to focus on the silhouette of the flowers.  In the second edit the main focus of this shot is the sunset in the middle of the frame using the silhouette of the trees to underline it.
In the third picture in the series I used the reflection of the water to lead the eye into the distance. I adjusted the lighting and brightness to bring out the blend of colours from the core yellow through to the orange, pink, and blue. Finally I chose to use the rule of leading lines in the silhouette to draw in the audience. Having a large part of the sky in shot helps the silhouette be the main focus.

EMOTIONS:
This is a simple but effective series showing different emotions a young person can experience. I decided not to over-edit these to allow the model’s feelings to be the main focus. I especially like how the model’s face is well-lit and stands out while his black top blends into the background. This shows how he is fading and getting lost in his emotions.

FILM MIND PLAN: CH6ICES
When I first saw the short film brief I create a mind map with my initial thoughts and ideas to start producing a narrative. I took influence of certain aspects from different films to include in my own. For example, from Nerve (2016), using overlays to act like the phone POV creating a tense atmosphere for the viewer.  This mind map evolved over time to lead me to my final idea captured  in my story board.
FILM STORY BOARD: CH6ICES
Story board for a short film with the brief  ‘a narrative which begins with an enigma’. I wanted to create a film that explores a teenager’s everyday life with the enigma provided by a mobile phone acting in a strange and different way leading to an unexpected ending.  I decided to use strong cinematography to drive the narrative rather than relying on other aspects like dialogue.

MOTORBIKE MAGAZINE FRONT COVER AND DOUBKE PAGE SPREAD MOCK SKETCHES:
In my BTEC media course I was given a brief to create a niche youth magazine. In contrast to my manipulated work in photography this allowed me to sketch up many ideas before settling on my final magazine layout.  I enjoyed using my creative mind in a different way, visualizing many possible outcomes on paper before picking up the camera and creating the outcome.

When mocking up my front cover I found that positioning the bike facing left meant the viewers naturally looked down the bike from left to right as they would with text.

My double-page spread mock-ups which showed me which close up shots I needed to support my article.
