Ensuring Food Security: Urban Farms In Karachi, Pakistan
This project is a multi-story structure for urban farming. The selected site is an urban left-over space so that the cost of the project is significantly lowered. The program proposes vertical urban farms and residences at various strategic locations within the site with algae algae ponds to convert sewer waste into water appropriate for irrigation. The building forms face south so that maximum sun light is achieved for plants. For this reason, a slant on the front side with minimum structural barriers are visible that also become key recognition elements for the buildings. Solar and wind analysis done for the project on Autodesk Revit reveals that the building form is more than helpful for vertical urban farming. Every single building in the project is self-sustainable and produces vegetable worth $500,000 per year.
