Family Business Place Illustration 1 - Family Advice

Concept: The big black blob filled with words (which are problems family businesses face), is beginning to consume the character whilst sleeping. Basically it highlights the problems and issues that keep you awake at night, a very dark but true message.

Family Business Place Illustration 2 - Purpose

Concept: The character on the left hightlighted with blue is the head of family business who is shaking hands with the lawyer/accountant/adviser etc, and both are standing in the light. But the man on the right shaking hands with the head of the family business does not realise that he isnt just making a deal with the head of the family business but everyone else involved in the family business who has an input, such as the wife, the sister, the uncle, the son etc.

Family Business Place Illustration 3 - Communication

Concept: This design concept is fairly straight-forward regarding communication. The illustration shows the different family members heading seperate directions in the boat as there is a lack of communication and stubborness in their facial expressions. The boat is therefore sinking with a hole in the middle where the water is bursting out which highlights the business is sinking also.

Family Business Place Illustration 4 - Values

Concept: The main messgae in this particular section was for the family members to have a shared vision and understand values. This is shown through the various characters holding a telescope which is seperated into shared sections and they all look happy to be looking in and moving in the same direction.

Family Business Place Illustration 5 - Governance

Concept: This illustration represents getting organized and in this case I have used a relevant quote in the design 'getting your ducks in a row'.

Family Business Place Illustration 6 - Education & Skills

Concept: This illustrations shows a family member of the business looking puzzled and asking questions to himself, wondering if they have the skills and talent needed for the business which is identified by the big blue coloured flower. The member needs to make the decision whether to be working in the family business or not also.

Family Business Place Illustration 7 - Ownership & Control

Concept: The message in this illustration is regarding ownership and control. In this case the family member is in the hot air balloon which wants to drift off and fly and be let loose from the objects weighing it down, highlighting a key issue of knowing or not knowing when the ownership should be passed on to another family member. Not letting go of the business when you need to because it means so much to you.

Family Business Place Illustration 8 - Philanthropy

Concept: This illustration message is all about philanthropy or charitable giving either by donating funds, time or expertise for the long term. The family members are coming together to build a loving heart shape for the long term.

Family Business Place Illustration 9 - Succession Planning

Concept: Burrying your head in the sand is the illustration concept. This is what most family business owners will do if they do not have a succession plan that is accurate and answer all the questions running around in their head.

Family Business Place Illustration 10 - Legacy

Concept: The owner of the business is standing at the top of the highest mountain peak looking down at his empire and lasting legacy, feeling very proud of what he is leaving behind, which is what every family business member or owner should be doing or thinking about.

Family Business Place Illustration 11- Advisers

Concept: Simply, the stars indicate that these are professional and trusted advisers who can aid any family business.

Family Business Place - Website Illustrations

Brief: To create and design 11 illustrations to be used on the Family Business Place Website. The 11 illustrations will represent the 11 different topics in the FBP Consultancy section of the website. The illustrations must convey the correct message based on the information for each consultancy section.

Solution: I brainstormed designs and discussed my ideas with the managing director for each section where we decided on the style and concept of each illustration. I thought of the illustration style to be very comical yet conveying a strong accurate message through the layout of the design. The style of the characters used was inspiration from the Despicable Me minions. The inclusion of colour blue adds to the particular message that is being conveyed by highlighting the significant features in the illustrations.

Comments: I really enjoyed having the freedom to implement my own style within the creation and designing of the illustrations following the guidelines that all agreed upon. I hope you like the final illustrations which are now live as still JPEGs on the Family Business Place website. I will be creating animated GIFS of these 11 illustrations in the style of a write-on technique.
