Fashion Story - Grand Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke Virginia
Factoid: The Hotel Roanoke, built by the tycoon owner of both the Norfolk & Western Railways, with construction started in 1882, was built to provide lavish accommodation to rail travelers who needed on a break on their journey. At the time, Roanoke (then called simply 'Big Lick') now the center of business & trade in SW Virginia, was only a small rail stop. Frederick Kimball spared NO expense to build this lavish English Tudor structure - furnished with Tiffany lamps, running ice water, electricity, and all the amenities that we now take for granted, but at the time were seen as incredible luxuries.
