AKIRA - Neo Tokyo

Virtual Art Exhibition.

Curated by The Unusual Network and produced by METAMO Industries, the AKIRA exhibition is a VR Art show, created before the explosion of NFT galleries.

Scope
Art Direction, Concept, 3D Modelling, Texturing, Lighting, Illustration.

AKIRA Virtual Art Show

Originally created to be a physical exhibition, scheduled to open 147 days before the Tokyo Olympics.

The AKIRA show was re-imagined to suit the online medium due to COVID-19, while retaining the sense of discovery that comes with wondering around a physical space.

_____
Typographic Details.

As a nod to Neo-Tokyo, the main title was created as a neon sign. We researched and based off a Katakana type that gives the right vibe to our reinterpretation, with the rest of the artwork scattered with typographic references to the anime.

Artwork Concept.

The artwork is inspired by the implosion scene, capturing the essence of AKIRA - Chaos and Destruction. The dynamic composition is littered with Easter eggs, paying homage to the land of the rising sun.

Process & Development.

3D softwares are great at duplicating and fracturing objects, which work well for the chaotic scene we're going for. Voronoi Fracture shatters any object into fragments, allowing us to control the distribution of the shattered pieces.

Top: Kaneda's outfit reference.
Left/ Right: 360 T-Pose and Rigged 3D pose using Mixamo.
Bottom: Iconic outfit created in Marvelous Designer.

Face Process & Development.

Kaneda in the comics and anime has always been portrayed as a goofy character. We reimagined what Kaneda would look like, influenced by the animes we grew up on.
