MUBIA Geomuseo delle Biancane is situated in Monterotondo Marittimo (Tuscany) where geothermics was born and the development of the area started: from the discovery of the boric acid to electricity production. Here visitors can discover geodiversity, learn how minerals and rocks have formed and can understand why the ground here is so warm and white. The geodiversity of the Biancane shows itself on the surface in a landscape that reminds of Dante’s Inferno. Outside the path winds through unique nature and landscapes among plumes of vapour, the “fumacchi.” The colour of the soil is peculiar, in some areas the geothermal alteration has resulted in white rocks for the presence of boron and other bright ocher rocks. The sense of smell is stimulated by hydrogen sulphide emanations, while our gaze remains captured by splendid yellow sulfur crystals.
