Almalaguês
Miranda do Corvo, Portugal

As I immersed myself in the story of Miranda do Corvo, I was easily enchanted by the traditional Almalaguês textile technique.

It is believed that due to the lack of color, the simplicity of the patterns, the pure geometry, and the embossing resulting from the threads pulled during weaving, this technique has been devalued, being seen as crude and less sophisticated. However, it was exactly these unique characteristics that inspired me for my piece, in an attempt to explore them and find their potential in simplicity.

Using almost exclusively the contrast between white and black, intentionally excluding an extensive color palette, several elements directly related to Almalaguês are represented: the figure of the woman, the water/river, and the traditional patterns.

This large-scale cross-stitch installation aims to break down stereotypes, transforming the simple into the complex and the brute into the delicate.
