The Nest Library and Community Building

Worked as part of the team who won the RIBA competition to design a library
and community building for Thamesmead in South East London. The building
is at the heart of a major regeneration development in Abbey Wood and is due
to open in early 2022.

The concept is based on the ideas of a Swan’s nest, reflecting the wildlife
that inhabits the neighbouring lake. The building will act as the beating heart
of the new village, it will be a nurturing place to inspire imagination,
encourage learning and facilitate growth.

The swan’s nest pattern wraps around the cantilevered upper level of the
building. The backlit perforated aluminium cladding incorporates 120,000
hand drawn holes into a bespoke design reflecting the Swan's nest concept.

A bed of reeds has been created within the library alongside welcoming
wildlife graphics to divide the main space from the Children’s Library.

My role involved concept development, competition board design, signage
and environmental graphic design, façade pattern concept design and regular
social media updates of the project's progress over the 5 year period
from conception through to completion.
