Jaishankar Sundari was one of the first stage actors in India to portray female characters on stage.
A lot of stage productions he directed were visually inspired from Bhavai [a folk dance-drama form from Gujarat, India] and the Beijing Opera. He was also deeply interested in literature, and brought to the commercial Gujarati theatre scene highly acclaimed works of respected writers. The list includes Saraswatichandra by Govardhanam tripathi, Shakespeare adaptations, etc.
