Canadian Blood Services asked our team to create a series of Instagram posts to help encourage first-time donors to give blood. This was as a part of the 2021 RGD Designathon and each team member was tasked with undertaking a different project to accomplish this task.

The current trend on social media these days is to accept and perform challenges. It was decided that by challenging youth to donate blood, they will rise to the occasion by participating and sharing the trend with others.

I wanted something simple and to the point, as is portrayed in Canadian Blood Services’ other social media material, so I created a carrousel of steps to take to participate in the challenge and designating the hashtag #findyourtype for the project.

In keeping with the format used by the organization, I used the iconography provided by Canadian Blood Services to illustrate all the posts to give them a bit of visual appeal, and kept the sentences short and simple to stay in sync with the habit of people merely glancing at posts.

The “This or That” stories were created in keeping with the brand guidelines and are an element of interaction which enables participants to show off their progress in their blood donation journey. The final panels help with the ultimate goal: showing off which blood type you have and finding a match.

With peer pressure being what it is, it’s my hope that youth wanting to challenge each other will consider blood donation as a means of staying with their status quo.
