SANDSTONE MOUNTAINS
Due to its bizarre rocky diversity, the so called Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland has a rich art and cultural history. Since several hundreds of years it represents a perfect creative space for artists such as the most famous painter of the German Romantic era, Casper David Friedrich.
Since the turn of the century and the early 1900's the area has become a world-renowned climbing paradise. With currently over 1,000 peaks and around 15,000 climbing routes, the Saxon Switzerland is one of the most important climbing areas within Europe. Artificial aids were deliberately avoided from the start - which resulted in the now world-famous form of "free climbing".
