Für die Coopzeitung Welschschweiz konnte ich einige Kantonswappen neu interpretieren. Die Farbgebung sollte gleich bleiben, in allem anderen war ich frei. Selber aus Uri stammend liess ich mich inspirieren von der Schöllenenschlucht und dem «Roten Teufel» des Urner Maler Heinrich Danioth. Ich lehnte meine Illustrationen an die abstrakte und reduzierte Darstellung des Teufels und seines Geissbocks an.
Ausser dem Uristier sind alle Tiere ganz abgebildet, also habe ich ihm auch einen Körper verpasst. Damit er frei steht, aber doch verbunden ist mit der Hintergrundfarbe, griff ich auf geometrische Formen zurück, welche die Farbe des Wappens wieder aufnehmen.
Die Tiere stellte ich in einer jeweils anderen Körper Position dar als auf dem Wappen selber. Das Tier an sich und die signifikanten Farben sollten Anhaltspunkt genug sein, um den Kanton zu erkennen. Der Linolschnitt beeinflusste die Ästhetik. Es wirkt also alles etwas rau und verfügt über keine grossen Details.
I was able to reinterpret some of the cantonal coats for the Coop newspaper Welschschweiz. The color scheme was to remain the same, but I was free in everything else. Being from Uri myself, I was inspired by the Schöllenen canyon and the "Red Devil" by the painter Heinrich Danioth from Uri. I based my illustrations on the abstract and reduced depiction of the devil and his goat.
Except for the Uristier, all the animals have a body, so I gave him one too. To make it free-standing but still connected to the background color, I resorted to geometric shapes that echo the color of the coat of arms.
I depicted the animals in a different body position than on the cantonal coats themselves. The animal itself and the significant colors should be enough of a clue to recognize the canton. The linocut influenced the aesthetics.
