While preparing for the eleventh solo exhibition
- Dance and Color (The Way of *Eol)
I have been painting the vessel(face) that contains ‘eol’ continuously. But there were times when embodying this ‘eol’ (portrait) did not go along as I wanted or intended. As I have pondered the actual cause of this diversion, the word “*in-yeon” always came to my mind. It could be the fundamental reason and the way.
I conduct an interview for a long time and look at one’s physiognomy and chiromancy before I paint that person. It is to get closer to one’s true nature, and I complete my piece by blending one’s hopes and dreams with phrenology.
The most simple and most important reason would be that I would like to leave the authentic image of that person.
However, people have not been as genuine as I have been. The reason could be varied and complex. But to be concise, people were mostly afraid of facing oneself or disapproved of confronting the truth.
Yet, I do not intend to persuade them. I do not wish to interrupt the flow of the way. If I do so, I cannot paint, I do not yearn to paint at all, or the work does not come out to be satisfactory. I choose not to dissipate my energy by exhausting my time and emotion.
I wish to have ‘in-yeon’ with those I truly long to draw and embody on a canvas. However, I choose not to anticipate having that connection with those people.
Hence, I would like to let the fundamental reason, the way, and ‘in-yeon’ decide. For ‘in-yeon’ with all who walk the right path and for the basis of ‘eol’ and everything that expresses it, I will seek and strive. Until I find the way and the basis of humankind.
