When Holly Warburton Turned Dada

When Holly Warburton Turned Dada
Visual Art & Design Direction: Activity 02 (Reinterpreted Art)
Popularized in the early years of the 20th century, Dadaism, or "Dada", was an art movement that served as what some may call a "snarky" response to the social or political happenings of that time. Dada art is known for its paradoxical and humorous quality, brought about by the nonsensical combinations of objects, photos, and / or texts in a single finished piece which somewhat challenged pre-existing boundaries indirectly, while simultaneously giving artists of this time more freedom than they ever had.

This reinterpretation of Holly Warburton's works aims to imitate the same characteristics of Dada art mentioned above. This piece is an indirect representation of how the COVID-19 virus has changed our day-to-day lives, as well as how it has even managed to create a divide between communities due to different points of view.

With the drastic changes this barely noticeable, but very present enemy brought, it was only natural for some to begin to fear it greatly. Naturally, as fear began to settle in, protective measures were taken—schools switched to online classes, some turned to spirituality, others began to distance and isolate themselves from crowds, with disinfectant sprays and soaps becoming ever so precious in the eyes of those who were concerned. Yet even with all of this happening, there still were those who refused to believe the virus existed and instead believed that the implemented safety measures were violating human rights to freedom. Thus, the division of pro-maskers from the anti-maskers.

Just as Holly Warburton's works showcase great contrast in terms of color, the artwork above aims to follow through with this in a deeper manner. The artwork above was pushed to become almost ironic or paradox-like as a whole. It is a combination of mentioned changes with the point of view and behavior of some anti-maskers, who go as far as "mocking" pro-maskers by wearing a form of mask. In addition to this, it is also a reminder for both sides of the divide of just how funny the other looks.
