Viennese Secession Comparative Analysis

Viennese Secession
The Viennese Secession was formed in 1987 as a response to conservative art institutions. Led by the desire to progress art, an Austrian group of artists such as Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Egon Schiele, Max Kurzweil, Joseph Olbrich and others, broke away from the Association of Austrian Artists and established the Union of Austrian Arts. (Takac, 2018)
As the Vienna secession artist sought to break away from traditional art institutions and they thus somewhat rejected the French floral Art Nouveau style, opting to utilize flat simplistic shapes and largely turning toward geocentrism. Thus they largely incorporated geometric patterns and modular design forms. Often utilizing a combination of repetitive squares, rectangles and circles. (mylms, 2021)

The above Viennese Secession piece was created in 1903 by Ver Sacrum. Looking at the piece it is evident that this particular piece has certain themes similar to that of its “parent’’ movement, Art Nouveau. Like art nouveau it often incorporates the female figure (which can be seen in the art piece above) but is however strikingly different as it does not have any floral components incorporated. This is because the Viennese secession sought break away and thus rejected the floral art style and instead turned toward geocentrism. This is evident in the Viennese Secession piece as it incorporates flat simplistic shapes, and use of repeating geometric shapes such as squares, triangles and circles
 (Archillect, n.d.)

The above design is an interior and architectural design. It incorporates flat simple shapes and line forms and thus visually resemble Sacrum’s piece (and the Vienna secession style as a whole). The architectural design embodies(the Vienna secession movement's) emphasis of advancing to geocentrism as it incorporates geometric patterns through the combination of repeating squares and rectangles which form patterns.
