Hollywood Beautification Team's profile

Understanding Mural Wall Art

Established in 1992, Hollywood Beautification Team was formed to bring citizens together to transform the environment to establish safe and healthy communities. The Hollywood Beautification Team comprises volunteers whose combined effort has facilitated the planting of more than 1,500 trees annually and the adoption of more than 140 public schools.

In addition, Los Angeles Beautification Team has transformed neighborhoods and campuses by completing over 250 mural walls. Mural art comprises artwork that has either been painted or directly applied to a wall, ceiling, or other large permanent surfaces.

Muralism traces its origins back to the 1920s when it was popular with major artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti. Mural walls are not difficult to achieve so long as you’re enthusiastic and energetic enough, as the work areas involved are usually large and require patience.

To work on a mural wall, you first need to clean it thoroughly to eliminate dust and grease. Then, choosing a mural painting is vital, especially if the mural art will be directly exposed to sunshine. This means the paint selected has to withstand weather conditions, and the best way to choose an ideal paint is to examine the paint's UV (lightfastness) qualities.

The recommended paints are good quality acrylic mural paints, but they can be expensive, so you need to evaluate your budget, especially when creating a large mural. For those on tight budgets, ordinary paint can be used. Then acrylic paints can be reserved only for detailing purposes. To avoid light reflecting off the mural, paint with an eggshell or matte finish is best. Clear varnish is necessary, especially for murals that small children can access as a protective layer, making cleaning easier.
