How Does Daily Bread Food Bank Fight Hunger?

n aspiring social worker, Teja Peltomaa is taking courses toward a bachelor of social work at Ryerson University. In the past, Teja Peltomaa has volunteered for community organizations focused on issues such as disordered eating, animal welfare, and hunger, including the Daily Bread Food Bank.

According to program estimates, the Daily Bread Food Bank distributed 17 million pounds of food in 2020, supporting more than 170 meal and food programs throughout Toronto. In 2021, the organization predicts that it will see a record-breaking 1.4 million visits to food banks. The Daily Bread Food Bank supports this great need through partnerships with a variety of community organizations.

When community members, farms, and corporations donate food, the items are sorted by volunteers for immediate distribution or stored in the warehouse for later use. Member agencies place weekly orders for their clients, then food is either packed or cooked into healthy, delicious meals. Daily Bread trucks make deliveries to more than 170 member agencies, and the organization advocates for long-term, systemic solutions to poverty.
