Typology Meets Pastas

This design project involves a typology publication with a unique twist - it is paired with different types of pastas to make the learning of type classification more engaging and memorable. The design concept draws on the similarities between type characteristics and pasta, both of which have a story to tell, are created by somebody, and originate from certain countries or eras. For instance, the shape of a penne pasta was derived from the nib of a fountain pen, which is typically used to write scripts.

The resulting book is professionally printed, perfect bound, and features an accompanying A2 size book jacket. This project demonstrates a creative and thoughtful approach to design, blending elements of typography and food in a unique and compelling way.

Project Type: Print, Editorial
Undergraduate Program at: Massey University, New Zealand

The Specifications
The book jacket features a display sans typeface, "Papelli" created by type designers Alisa Nowak and Julie Soudanne. The jacket was inspired by the pasta packaging where it usually states the product description, net weight, ingredients, cooking time, al dente, servings, origin and date of expiry. Except this time it comes with a twist, the characteristics of the typeface.
