Narrative Information Design: Takahē, 2021

This aim of this project was to provide factual and statistical information about a New Zealand endangered species and present that information as a narrative over three A2 posters. Using facts, graphs, statistics, and information and condensing this information into visually engaging, accurate design system, the information is clearly understood and easily digested by the viewer. The overall aim was to educate someone who has never heard of the species before and provide them with all the information they need to be informed on the species itself, threats to the species and conservation efforts made to save the species from extinction.  I chose the Takahē.

My posters are aimed at an audience who aren’t familiar with the Takahē itself and the conservation efforts to save them. I wanted my posters to be fun and colourful to encourage children and adults alike to engage and learn about one of New Zealand’s endangered species. I wanted my posters to have a good balance of formal/factual information but present it in a light-hearted and engaging way, focussing on the recovery and hope for the future of the Takahē as much as the uneasy past this species has faced. I used playful typefaces in the title and subheading of the posters to give an overview of what the poster would contain – a kind of headline to draw in the viewer (e.g. “we’re kind of a big deal”, “back from the dead...twice!” and “the greatest kiwi comeback”)

I used a minimal colour palette of red and royal blue to coincide with the colouring of the Takahē’s plumage and tie into the illustrations I painted. I made silhouetted vector icons to describe facts of features relating to the Takahē to keep my spread minimal and not pull focus from my hero illustrations which I wanted to be the focus.  As far as graphs, maps and statistics, I followed the same pattern, minimal and to the point as I wanted my design system to be clean and consistent across all three posters.
