Apps for Panamerican Games 2011

TABLET APPS FOR PANAMERICAN GAMES 2011
is a continental multi-sport event in the Americas featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions every 4 years.

In 2011 This event was set in Guadalajara and the organizers required an app that could control the illumination of buildings and roads from a grand model of Guadalajara city.
MY ROLE
UX Designer leading the app and responsive web design from conception to delivery conducting user research, wireframing, prototyping and conducting usability studies, iterating on designs and designing mockups and high-fidelity prototypes.
USER RESEARCH
The research revealed that there were 2 main users; kids from 8 to 12 years and young adults up to 40 years. Kids would use the app as game interacting with the grand model and the young adults would use it to search activities and locations.
Wireframes and Low-fidelity prototypes
Early usability studies revealed that designs had technical challenges with technology at the moment. There couldn't be a lot of interactive sections in the same space and links didn't work properly. I had to design an strategy to implement the requirements using the current equipment.
High-fidelity prototypes
Usability studies revealed that users would be overwhelmed by information and resulted in 3 different apps that each would activate different sections in the grand model.

I designed 3 different apps; one where users could search schedules for events, one where users could search for locations and traditional places of the city and one where users could find official locations for competitions
RESULTS
Almost a million users were able to find the information of the events and foreigners could get to know about the culture of the city. The grand model and the apps were available for the duration of the Panamerican Games in the multi-purpose Arena Expo de Guadalajara.

I learned to interact and communicate with developers directly and how to take technology limitations into account for the project. This was my first experience designing Interfaces for mobile devices.
